I’ve never tried gardening before, but this year I decided to give it a shot. With a large family to feed and our constant efforts to save money, I reasoned that I could contribute by providing some of our fresh fruits and vegetables. The problem was that all of my previous attempts at gardening had failed. As much as I desired to have a green thumb, mine was more of a yellowish brown. Needless to say, I had low expectations…very low. Yet, I wanted to give it a try.
I decided to hedge my bets by using seedlings, instead of planting seeds. With help from my wonderful husband, we dug a small garden behind the garage. I carefully planted my seedlings, watered them daily, and weeded them often. To my immense surprise, they grew. Not just a little, but a lot. It wasn’t long before the zucchini plants were as tall as our 2 year old and the watermelon plant began to resemble a large octopus and refused to stay within the confines of the garden. Each time I rounded the garage to check on my little garden, I was amazed to see that all the plants continued to grow, flowers began to bloom, and little baby fruits and vegetables made an appearance. My little garden was thriving.
Unfortunately, summer greeted us with record high temperatures and a drought. Although we continued to water the garden daily, the leaves began to wilt and I feared that the baby fruits and vegetables would not survive. Rain. We needed rain.
Yesterday, it happened. God blessed us with a full day of sweet and refreshing rain! Not just a few sprinkles, but a good soaking rain. Oh, how beautiful it was to see!
While we have already benefitted from several zucchini, I’m hopeful that our little garden will continue to produce food for my family. Maybe I’m starting to get a bit of a green thumb after all.
Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. Hebrews 6:7 (NIV)
I couldn’t help but smile while I was reading your post. A blooming garden is always a joy, no matter what color our thumbs may be. May this year still prove to be a bountiful for your family!
